An Antique Clock Is A Joy Forever

Nowadays, in this fast paced,modern world we take knowing the time for granted. The emphasis, certainly in the industrialised western world, is on time. We live our lives by the clock. Appointments are made and broken, transport systems are run to the millisecond and and our working days are divided equally into manageable chunks of time. However, our ancient ancestors lived their lives in a much less ordered way, and for them, telling the time was of a far lesser importance.

That being said however, human beings have developed to become resourceful and inquisitive types and so it was inevitable that our ancestors would develop ways of measuring the time. In the very early days of human history there are records of the sundial being used as an instrument to measure time. Indeed there are numerous mentions of sundials throughout the Old Testament. We are aware of their use in all the ancient civilisations such as the Greeks, Egyptians and Babylonians.

So the sundial, as basic a concept as it is, remained the most common method of time keeping up until the invention of mechanical clocks in the late 13th century. Of course many other basic clocks had come and gone, the early saxons with their candle clocks and of course the ancient Egyptians with the water clocks of around 1400 BC but it wasn’t until the middle ages that the measurement of time became a necessity of modern living and an industry was born. The word clock was first used around this time and it is thought to be derived from “Clocca” the latin word for bell.

The exact details of who invented the first mechanical clock and indeed where and when is not known. What is beyond doubt though is that the oldest working mechanical clock still in use today is situated at Salisbury Cathedral and dates from 1386. Interestingly it has no dial and only chimes the hours. In fact all early mechanical clocks had no face and were actually set using a sundial. As a result of this the accuracy and reliability of the early clocks was a bit hit and miss!

It took the invention of the pendulum clock to really start to see some improvements in accuracy. Where mechanical clocks had previously been accurate to within about half an hour a day they were now telling the time to within a loss or gain of about a minute or so. The onset of the pendulum clock is the direct forerunner to the development of todays ultra scientific atomic clocks, accurate to a billionth of a second and bearing absolutely no resemblance to the clocks of yesteryear.

It was around 1580 that the renowned astronomer Galileo came up with the idea, although sadly he would die before his concept ever became fully developed, of a pendulum clock. He had spent some time watching a lamp hanging from a long chain swinging from the ceiling of his local cathedral. He noted that each swing was of equal measure and had a rate of motion that was entirely dependent on the length of the chain or pendulum. Some 50 years later, just before he died he designed a basic clock mechanism which incorporated this swing and the concept of the pendulum clock was born. Following Galileos death it fell upon the renowned clock maker Christian Huygens to build a clock mechanism incorporating a pendulum that would keep time. This is the same template used by all clock and watchmakers today.

Now 400 years later and the joy of an antique pendulum clock, with all it’s inherent craftsmanship is still there for all to see. There can be no more relaxing sound in life than that of a pendulum softly swinging in perfect time and softly beating out the rhythms of the day. I know that in today’s modern age there are many more accurate ways of telling the time, but lets be honest here. Is it actually that vital that your day is measured by the billionth of a second? If the answer is no, as it undoubtedly should be, then you should treat yourself to a beautiful and wonderfully crafted antique clock and bring some real joy into the lives of those around you.

What Is Time – A Guide To Antique Clocks

What exactly is time, and how did we actually end up arriving at our current system of 12 months in a year, 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour and 60 seconds in a minute. After all, one would imagine that it would make far more sense to use a straightforward decimal system, multiples of 10 are used in pretty much every other measurement system known to modern man.

It would seem that our modern timekeeping system is in fact a mish mash of systems devised by a number of various cultures. The ancient Greeks, who else, for whom we have a tremendous amount to be thankful for, were the first culture to divide a year into 12 months. They then took the next step of dividing each of these months into thirty days.

So far so good, however, we have the Egyptians and the Babylonians to thank for coming up with the 24 hour clock. They divided the day into 24 parts that they referred to as hours. However, their system was far from perfect as they just divided the time between the sun rising and setting into 12 equal parts.

Now as we all know the time between the sun rising and setting is not a constant, and the length of both day and night varies on your geographical location. So, not the most accurate of systems but at least we are starting to get there.

Eventually some clever individuals came up with the idea of simply dividing the whole day into 24 equal parts and calling them hours. Now it became possible to tell the time in a much more accurate fashion. The final part of the equation comes when the Sumerians come up with the idea of dividing each hour into 60 minutes consisting of 60 seconds each. This is known as the Sumerian Sexagecimal System, which is based on the number 60 and was developed some 4000 or so years ago. The number 60 had huge significance to various cultures of the time. It is at this point that we arrived at what we now know as time.

Our ancient ancestors, for the most part only really needed a rough idea of what time of day it was, let’s be honest there were very few really urgent appointments for a peasant farmer or common labourer to keep, as long as he got up in the morning and worked till it was dark then he knew everything would be ok and the world would keep turning. However, the human race is a naturally inquisitive beast and is constantly looking for ways to develop and so came up with more ingenious ways of recording the time more accurately.

The first of these was the Sundial, many of which are still in use today, mainly as ornamental garden features. Now of course we have come a long way from these rudimentary time keeping systems. Early sundials were eventually replaced by water clocks and the like. Saxons even used a candle clock where a candle was divided into equal segments that each took an hour to burn. Of course one has to ask how they knew the length of an hour to begin with! In the early years of the second millenium more sophisticated timepieces came into being. Invariably they were mechanical clocks that were time consuming and labour intensive and invariably reserved for the local church, but the evolution of antique clocks had been set in motion.

In the 21st century time keeping has become a precise science and modern watches keep time to within a quarter of a second per year. However, I ask the question: Do they really have the intrinsic beauty and craftsmanship of the early antique clocks of our forefathers? I would imagine that it is a matter of taste. An antique clock is a thing of beauty and a joy forever, and in my opinion no home is complete without one.
